Alfie Grant and Shaun Russell both joined us for two weeks of work experience in February 2023. They were from Year 10 at Crookhorn Technology College.

Alfie was paired with one of our Multitrade Operatives – Scott Barber. He helped to retile a bathroom, refitted plasterboard and fitted flooring during his placement. He said his favourite job was cutting a bath panel. Scott got him to trace to the edge of the pipes and help with the scribing and cutting.
Scott said “Alfie has been keen to learn and listens when I explain jobs to him. He shows initiative asking questions and is forward thinking. He has done well.”
Meanwhile Shaun chose to go with one of our Electricians and was paired with Billy Tipler. He got to work on lights, air vents, switches and lots of extractor fans. His favourite job was helping Billy to fit an extractor fan in a kitchen. Billy set it up so that Shaun could screw it in by hand.
Shaun said he was thinking that he might like to go the Apprenticeship route when he leaves school. He was uncertain which Apprenticeship he would choose and said that whilst he had enjoyed the Electrical work he would also like to see some of the Carpentry jobs too. We made sure that Shaun was then paired with a Carpenter for two days before his work experience period finished.
Shaun said he had told his Mum how he had learnt to install plugs, and about the wiring in a socket and switches. He was a bit worried when his Mum replied “That’s good if anything goes wrong in the house, you can fix it now!”

Work Experience with Comserv
All students go through an interview process with Comserv before they join us on a work experience placement. This gives them experience of an interview situation and gives us the opportunity to discuss where their interests lie for allocating them to the right area so that they can get the most from their placement.
Our HR team liaised directly with Crookhorn College’s Careers Leader – Clare Mack to set up the placements for Alfie, Shaun and another student. If you work in a similar role and would like to speak to us about work experience please get in touch.
The students need to be prepared to go out with one of our Operatives and also to go into tenants homes. Both Alfie and Shaun found the Operatives they were paired with easy to get along with and were also comfortable chatting to the tenants.
If you are a student looking for a work experience placement or a local school or college seeking placements, please contact our HR team by emailing: admin@comserv-uk.com. We will do our best to accommodate your requirements.
